Our fearless leader carts us around the peninsula in a traditional ox cart. Or, maybe a ferry. Pastor Jorge... you might recognize him from some of the first photos I took here in Costa Rica. When I spoke next to no spanish I went along with him on a trip to an indigenous reserve (Bribri, Cabécar) to help build an orphanage. This time he took me through the opposite side of the country
One of Columbus' original boats to cross the Atlantic. Special delivery across the channel
Pastor Eladio. This guy is the man, I'll explain later. Fresh fish. Starfruit juice. Shrimp fried rice. This family literally lives on what comes straight from their garden (and the ocean).
Pastor Jorge takes a break. Behind him is one of the only cars on Deer Island. At the time when it was one of the only two cars on the island, it crashed. Into the only other car on the island. I took this chance to try and translate the "Murphy's Law" concept. Deer Island's newest and only road. Pastor Eladio proudly pointed to one of the high school classrooms. "Our church helped build that one," he explained. His comments like that and some others made me very proud to be a part of the church.
Moonrise over Pastor Graciano's house sunset over the cane fields, in Guardia
Even the doggy was invited to the celebration
That is one big pot of rice. Moon rising through the steam at "la safra" (the sugar cane processing plant)
Homage to Pan's Labrynth. This "tree" is called a "matapalo," it's a parasite that grows around a tree and suffocates it, sucking all its nutrients away until it grows as tall as a real tree. Except its hollow insides. This one got struck by lightening and split in half. Pastor Graciano and his truck that hauls azucar cane Pastor Jorge and his wife
